A PET Water Bottle Is Leaking: What to Check and When to Replace It
If a PET water bottle leaks through its body or neck, stop using it for drinking water and replace it. Do not seal a crack with household glue or epoxy. If the leak appears only around the cap, check that the cap and any removable gasket are clean, undamaged, and fitted as the bottle maker specifies. Replace a damaged or incompatible closure rather than improvising a repair.

Find where the water is escaping
Empty the bottle and dry its outside. Refill it only to the level allowed by its instructions, fit the usual cap, and place it upright over a dry surface. Watch whether moisture first appears at the cap, threads, neck, or bottle wall. If the source is unclear, do not return the bottle to use until it has been checked.
If the leak is around the cap
- Check that the cap is the correct model and sits squarely on the neck.
- If the design includes a removable gasket or liner, inspect it for dirt, displacement, cuts, or deformation. Clean or replace it only as the manufacturer directs.
- Make sure the threads are clean and undamaged, then close the cap as instructed. Over-tightening can damage a closure or its seal.
- If it still leaks, stop using the bottle and replace the cap or bottle with a compatible part.
If the bottle body or neck is cracked
Replace the bottle. An adhesive marketed for household use, or described broadly as “food safe,” does not by itself confirm suitability for a particular PET resin, liquid, contact duration, temperature, and cleaning process. Do not use a repaired bottle for drinking water unless the bottle maker has confirmed the complete repair and intended conditions in writing.
What should packaging buyers check?
For a production or filled-package leak, keep affected samples separate and record where the leak appears, the bottle and closure models, the contents, fill level, and the test or handling conditions. Check the bottle neck, cap, liner, and closure application as one package. Ask the supplier to review the specified components and repeat the agreed leak test; do not apply a consumer repair method to a production package.

Frequently asked questions
Can I repair a PET water bottle with 502 glue, epoxy, or silicone?
This article cannot verify a generic adhesive for a specific bottle and drinking-water use. Do not rely on glue to make a cracked bottle suitable for reuse; replace it or obtain written confirmation from the bottle manufacturer for the exact material and use conditions.
Can I tighten the cap more to stop a leak?
First check that the cap is the correct one and that the threads and seal are clean and correctly seated. Follow the manufacturer’s closure instructions; more tightening is not a universal fix.
What should I do if a filled product package leaks?
Separate the affected samples, record the conditions, and check the bottle, neck finish, cap, liner, and closure process with the supplier. The complete package should be evaluated against its written requirements.
